agency has two parts: yin and yang:

  • yang agency: take steps. break apart a goal into subgoals until one is tractable, rinse, repeat.
  • yin agency: manifestation. believe that you can do the thing. believe that it will happen even if you don't know how yet.

the predictive processing frame unifies these: belief that you will achieve a goal is the force that ultimately achieves the goal.

yin without yang: you just sit there, delusional, nothing happens.

yang without yin: you take all the steps but your heart isn't in it. your plan to be a movie star is to move to LA, take acting classes, start going to auditions, etc. but some part of you doesn't believe that you'll succeed. so you don't go the extra mile. you keep waiting tables full-time so you don't eat into your savings. you don't come up with creative unorthodox plans: cold-call the director, etc.

without the belief in success, there's always a conflict between the striving planning action and authentic being. if at the core of your being, when you let go of all doing, is something that doesn't believe in itself --- then it's not safe to let go of doing. which means the doing itself becomes twisted, compulsed.

yang with yin: you still move to LA, go to auditions, etc. but in the moment of the audition, you can let go of calculation and planning. you totally trust yourself that you are a movie star and the world will recognize this.

replace movie star with 'rock star', star entrepreneur, star researcher, etc.
