right effort
This page is from my personal notes, and has not been specifically reviewed for public consumption. It might be incomplete, wrong, outdated, or stupid. Caveat lector.four right efforts:
Restraint: avoid unwholesome situations that might give rise to or trigger unwholesome states and patterns. For example, if you're trying to reduce drinking, don't go to parties where people are drinking.
Abandoning: notice when you have an unwholesome / unskillful pattern, and resolve to let it go. For example, if you're constantly checking your phone, have a goal to only look at the news x times per day.
Developing: develop wholesome states that haven't arisen yet. the six perfections, seven factors of awakening, four brahmaviharas, etc.
Protecting: protect wholesome patterns that have arisen. if you're a generous person, don't let society pull you away from that. if you're sensitive, don't let culture deaden you. This can involve restraint; limit your exposure to things that will pollute the mindstream.
